Help for Depression

Depression can affect our hearts, minds, bodies and souls. It can leave us feeling ashamed, anxious, angry or even guilty. We may experience a profound sadness and ultimately believe that we're unlovable, worthless and hopeless.  Due to depression's hold over us we can get caught up in unhelpful and painful patterns of thinking. Brooding about the past on the one hand and worrying about the future on the other. Depression it seems, doesn't take a day off.

As we do what we can to handle depression we may encounter a number of symptoms.  Maybe you've lost interest in aspects of your life that you once enjoyed?  Do you find it difficult to concentrate or maybe you notice you become irritated by others for no reason? Do you wake early in the morning unable to get back to sleep? Are you experiencing prolonged tiredness? Does your body ache? Do you wish to avoid responsibilities and withdraw from the world?

Maybe you have been dealing with depression for a long time. Perhaps you've been doing your best to hide it from loved ones or from colleagues at work?  Or maybe a friend or family member has recognised that you're suffering and has encouraged you reach out to someone for help? The pain and suffering depression can cause and the effort required to tolerate it cannot be underestimated. But don't give up. You can recover from depression.

How can counselling help me?

Counselling is time dedicated to you. It is a safe space where you and your depression are taken seriously. It is also an opportunity for you to be yourself and to not have to pretend anymore.

With the aid of CBT, a type of practical therapy, counselling can help you to identify what's causing and maintaining your depression while learning how to use effective coping strategies in a confidential and non-judgemental environment.

Together CBT and counselling target the three main areas of depression: thoughts, feelings and behaviours helping you to generate new perspectives and re-engage with life.

Why choose me as your counsellor?

Having personally experienced and recovered from depression also with the help of counselling and CBT, I can draw upon my experiences for your benefit. I believe I am in a position not only to appreciate the practical and emotional effort required to understand and make a difference to your depression but also the challenges you my encounter along the way.

To help facilitate this process I work in a straight forward, flexible and down to earth manner.  I'm not here to tell you to pull your socks up, to judge you or tell you what to do. Together, we participate in finding the particular combination of interventions for depression that work for you.
